RESUMO

Handedness is an essential attribute of chiral nanocrystals, having a major influence on their properties. During chemical growth, the handedness of nanocrystals is usually tuned by selecting the corresponding enantiomer of chiral molecules involved in asymmetric growth, often known as chiral inducers. We report that, even using the same chiral inducer enantiomer, the handedness of chiral gold nanocrystals can be reversed by using Au nanorod seeds with either single crystalline or pentatwinned structure. This effect holds for chiral growth induced both by amino acids (e.g. cystine) and by chiral micelles (comprising cetyltrimethylammonium chloride and 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2-diamine). Although it was challenging to discern the morphological handedness for L-cystine-directed particles, even using electron tomography, both cases showed circular dichroism bands of opposite sign, with nearly mirrored chiroptical signatures for chiral micelle-directed growth, along with quasi-helical wrinkles of inverted handedness. These results expand the chiral growth toolbox with an effect that might be exploited to yield a host of interesting morphologies with tunable optical properties.

Chirality in gold nanostructures offers an exciting opportunity to tune their differential optical response to left- and right-handed circularly polarized light, as well as their interactions with biomolecules and living matter. However, tuning and understanding such interactions demands quantification of the structural features that are responsible for the chiral behavior. Electron tomography (ET) enables structural characterization at the single-particle level and has been used to quantify the helicity of complex chiral nanorods. However, the technique is time-consuming and consequently lacks statistical value. To address this issue, we introduce herein a high-throughput methodology that combines images acquired by secondary electron-based electron beam-induced current (SEEBIC) with quantitative image analysis. As a result, the geometric chirality of hundreds of nanoparticles can be quantified in less than 1 h. When combining the drastic gain in data collection efficiency of SEEBIC with a limited number of ET data sets, a better understanding of how the chiral structure of individual chiral nanoparticles translates into the ensemble chiroptical response can be reached.

The bottom-up production of chiral gold nanomaterials holds great potential for the advancement of biosensing and nano-optics, among other applications. Reproducible preparations of colloidal nanomaterials with chiral morphology have been reported, using cosurfactants or chiral inducers such as thiolated amino acids. However, the underlying growth mechanisms for these nanomaterials remain insufficiently understood. We introduce herein a purposely devised chiral inducer, a cysteine modified with a hydrophobic chain, as a versatile chiral inducer. The amphiphilic and chiral features of this molecule provide control over the chiral morphology and the chiroptical signature of the obtained nanoparticles by simply varying the concentration of chiral inducer. These results are supported by circular dichroism and electromagnetic modeling as well as electron tomography to analyze structural evolution at the facet scale. Our observations suggest complex roles for the factors involved in chiral synthesis: the chemical nature of the chiral inducers and the influence of cosurfactants.

The discovery of superconductivity in planar nickelates raises the question of how the electronic structure and correlations of Ni1+ compounds compare to those of the Cu2+ cuprate superconductors. Here, we present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the trilayer nickelate Pr4Ni3O8, revealing a Fermi surface resembling that of the hole-doped cuprates but with critical differences. Specifically, the main portions of the Fermi surface are extremely similar to that of the bilayer cuprates, with an additional piece that can accommodate additional hole doping. We find that the electronic correlations are about twice as strong in the nickelates and are almost k-independent, indicating that they originate from a local effect, likely the Mott interaction, whereas cuprate interactions are somewhat less local. Nevertheless, the nickelates still demonstrate the strange-metal behavior in the electron scattering rates. Understanding the similarities and differences between these two families of strongly correlated superconductors is an important challenge.

The START (Supporting Treatment Adherence Readiness through Training) intervention was examined for its effects on ART adherence and virologic suppression relative to usual care. A sample of 176 clients about to start or restart ART were randomized (83 to START, 93 to usual care) at HIV clinics in the Los Angeles area. Primary outcomes included electronically monitored dose-taking adherence and HIV viral load; primary end points were months 6 and 24, with group differences examined using nonresponse-weighted means or proportions, effect sizes, and significance testing. Item nonresponse was addressed using multiple imputation. 166 (94.3%) participants started ART, of whom 124 (74.7%) were still in care at month 6, and 90 (54.2%) at month 24. In comparison to the usual care control group, the START group had higher dose-taking adherence at month 6 (86.2% vs. 71.6%, d = 0.56, p = 0.01), which was sustained through month 24 (86.0% vs. 61.1%, d =1.01, p < 0.0001). While rates of undetectable viral load did not differ between groups at month 6 or 24, the mean reduction in viral load (log10 copies/mm3) at month 24 was significantly greater in the intervention arm (3.0 vs. 2.7; d = 0.40, p = 0.047). An estimated cost of $132 per person was needed to obtain a 10% increase in dose-taking adherence over 24 months from the intervention. These findings suggest that START is cost effective in producing a medium to large effect on dose-taking adherence that is durable over 24 months, and a modest long-term effect on viral reduction.Trial registration Clinicaltrials.gov NCT02329782 (registered December 22, 2014).

RESUMO

Cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) has helped with advanced technological improvement in the cardiac field and has been a long-term alternative to medical management. There are different forms of CIEDs such as pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy. These devices are efficient in establishing near-normal hemodynamics and circulation that ultimately aid physicians to improve the quality of life for their patients. However, there are risk factors that can result in postoperative complications, including infection, lead and pulse generator complications, heart complications, medication-related complications, and psychosocial complications. To ensure optimal outcome of CIED placement, preprocedural measures need to be in place such as matching the right candidate and using appropriate devices. This review aims to highlight the surgical techniques for CIEDs, the associated postoperative complications, and long-term health effects.

Although current standard of care for HIV typically involves immediate initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), most patients can benefit from first assessing adherence readiness and addressing any barriers to optimal adherence. A sample of 176 HIV patients planning to start ART enrolled in a controlled trial of an adherence intervention that was based on the Information Motivation and Behavioral skills (IMB) model of health behavior. We examined correlates of multiple adherence readiness measures, as well as electronically measured early ART adherence, to identify variables most important for readiness to adhere well at the start of treatment. Education level, recency of HIV diagnosis and knowledge and commitment to adherence were found to be associated with both ART readiness and early ART adherence. These findings suggest that resources to support adherence readiness should target more experienced HIV patients, and strive to bolster knowledge and attitudes that reinforce commitment to adherence.

Novel magnetic topological materials pave the way for studying the interplay between band topology and magnetism. However, an intrinsically ferromagnetic topological material with only topological bands at the charge neutrality energy has so far remained elusive. Using rational design, we synthesized MnBi8Te13, a natural heterostructure with [MnBi2Te4] and [Bi2Te3] layers. Thermodynamic, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements show that despite the adjacent [MnBi2Te4] being 44.1 Å apart, MnBi8Te13 manifests long-range ferromagnetism below 10.5 K with strong coupling between magnetism and charge carriers. First-principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal it is an axion insulator with sizable surface hybridization gaps. Our calculations further demonstrate the hybridization gap persists in the two-dimensional limit with a nontrivial Chern number. Therefore, as an intrinsic ferromagnetic axion insulator with clean low-energy band structures, MnBi8Te13 serves as an ideal system to investigate rich emergent phenomena, including the quantized anomalous Hall effect and quantized magnetoelectric effect.

Magnetic topological insulators (TI) provide an important material platform to explore quantum phenomena such as quantized anomalous Hall effect and Majorana modes, etc. Their successful material realization is thus essential for our fundamental understanding and potential technical revolutions. By realizing a bulk van der Waals material MnBi4Te7 with alternating septuple [MnBi2Te4] and quintuple [Bi2Te3] layers, we show that it is ferromagnetic in plane but antiferromagnetic along the c axis with an out-of-plane saturation field of ~0.22 T at 2 K. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations further demonstrate that MnBi4Te7 is a Z2 antiferromagnetic TI with two types of surface states associated with the [MnBi2Te4] or [Bi2Te3] termination, respectively. Additionally, its superlattice nature may make various heterostructures of [MnBi2Te4] and [Bi2Te3] layers possible by exfoliation. Therefore, the low saturation field and the superlattice nature of MnBi4Te7 make it an ideal system to investigate rich emergent phenomena.

Determining a patient's readiness to adhere well prior to the start of ART provides an opportunity to address adherence barriers before poor pill taking habits form, and ultimately improve clinical outcomes and resource utilization. Three methods of measuring adherence readiness and their comparative utility in predicting early ART adherence were examined in a sample of 176 patients preparing to start ART. Data were analyzed data from a randomized controlled trial of a cognitive-behavioral adherence intervention. Three measures of pre-ART adherence readiness (provider estimate, 1 week vitamin practice trials, and self-report [HIV Medication Readiness Scale; Transtheoretical Stages of Change item (TSOC)] were examined in association with measures of (1) ART initiation, (2) ART retention, (3) mean electronic dose-taking adherence, and (4) achievement of optimal (85+ % dose-taking) adherence, over the first 3 months of ART. Of the 176 patients, 166 (94.3%) started ART; 124 (74.7% of those who started ART; 70.5% of whole sample) completed the first 3 months of ART. Among the 124 still on ART at month 3, mean dose-taking adherence was 79.3%, and 62 (35.2% of whole sample) achieved optimal adherence. The provider estimate was the only readiness measure significantly associated with each of the four measures of early ART adherence, and it had the highest concordance statistics (71% PPV and 62.3% NPV) with optimal early ART adherence. Practice trial adherence was only associated with ART initiation and retention. Dose-taking adherence over 3 months was significantly correlated with the provider estimate and the two self-reports. Each method of early treatment adherence has its own utility, but the provider estimate had the best overall performance in predicting early ART adherence.

We present a concurrent self-assembly strategy for patterning hierarchical polymeric surface features by depositing variable-composition blends of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) and polybutadiene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PB-b-PEO) block copolymers at the air-water interface. Hierarchical strand networks of hydrophobic PS/PB blocks anchored via PEO blocks to the water surface, with an internal phase-separation structure consisting of periodic domains of PS blocks surrounded and connected by a matrix of PB blocks, are generated by the interplay of interfacial amphiphilic block copolymer aggregation and polymer/polymer phase separation. In contrast to the cylinder-in-strand structures previously formed by our group in which interfacial microphase separation between PS and PB blocks was constrained by chemical connectivity between the blocks, in the current system phase separation between PS and PB is not constrained by chemical connectivity and yet is confined laterally within surface features at the air-water interface. Investigations of multi-component polymer systems with different connectivities constraining repulsive and attractive interactions provides routes to new hierarchical surface patterns for a variety of applications, including photolithography masks, display technology, surface-guided cell growth and tissue engineering.

Daily compensable cold exposure in humans reduces shivering by ~20% without changing total heat production, partly by increasing brown adipose tissue thermogenic capacity and activity. Although acclimation and acclimatization studies have long suggested that daily reductions in core temperature are essential to elicit significant metabolic changes in response to repeated cold exposure, this has never directly been demonstrated. The aim of the present study is to determine whether daily cold-water immersion, resulting in a significant fall in core temperature, can further reduce shivering intensity during mild acute cold exposure. Seven men underwent 1 h of daily cold-water immersion (14°C) for seven consecutive days. Immediately before and following the acclimation protocol, participants underwent a mild cold exposure using a novel skin temperature clamping cold exposure protocol to elicit the same thermogenic rate between trials. Metabolic heat production, shivering intensity, muscle recruitment pattern, and thermal sensation were measured throughout these experimental sessions. Uncompensable cold acclimation reduced total shivering intensity by 36% (P = 0.003), without affecting whole body heat production, double what was previously shown from a 4-wk mild acclimation. This implies that nonshivering thermogenesis increased to supplement the reduction in the thermogenic contribution of shivering. As fuel selection did not change following the 7-day cold acclimation, we suggest that the nonshivering mechanism recruited must rely on a similar fuel mixture to produce this heat. The more significant reductions in shivering intensity compared with a longer mild cold acclimation suggest important differential metabolic responses, resulting from an uncompensable compared with compensable cold acclimation. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Several decades of research have been dedicated to reducing the presence of shivering during cold exposure. The present study aims to determine whether as little as seven consecutive days of cold-water immersion is sufficient to reduce shivering and increase nonshivering thermogenesis. We provide evidence that whole body nonshivering thermogenesis can be increased to offset a reduction in shivering activity to maintain endogenous heat production. This demonstrates that short, but intense cold stimulation can elicit rapid metabolic changes in humans, thereby improving our comfort and ability to perform various motor tasks in the cold. Further research is required to determine the nonshivering processes that are upregulated within this short time period.

Plasmodium falciparum, the causative agent of malaria, employs a diverse array of surface displayed proteins to promote dissemination and establish infection in the human host. Of these, Pf3D7_0606800 is highly immunogenic and has been designated a potential top 10 candidate for inclusion in a multicomponent malarial vaccine. The role of Pf3D7_0606800 in parasite biology, however, is unknown and its characterization has been complicated by a lack of sequence identity with proteins of known structure or function. Towards elucidating Pf3D7_0606800 function, we determined its structure to a resolution of 2.35 Å using selenium single wavelength anomalous dispersion. A bi-lobed architecture displays the core structural hallmarks of Venus Flytrap (VFT) proteins prompting us to re-annotate Pf3D7_0606800 as PfVFT1. Structural analysis further revealed an extended inter-lobe groove that, when interrogated by molecular docking, appears well suited to bind peptide-based ligands. Collectively, our structural characterization of the highly antigenic P. falciparum surface protein PfVFT1 provides intriguing functional insight and establishes a structural template that could prove valuable for malaria vaccine engineering studies.
